Leah Simone on Crafting Sound, Motherhood, and Musical Reckonings
Meet the Singer-Songwriter
Through harmonies that stir and lyrics that question, Leah Simone invites listeners into a world of emotional truth.
DH: I reached out to singer-songwriter Leah Simone for a Q&A after seeing one of her videos on IG. In awe of her sound, I asked how she navigates the ebb and flow of inspiration, motherhood, and music-making in a world that demands both softness and resistance.
Crafting Sound
DH: Your music embodies sensuality and truth. What rituals or intentions guide you in creating intimate, empowering sound?
LS: I don’t have a set practice when I create. I just allow myself to flow and let Source move through me. I usually take time to process my emotions and move through them. When I have downtime, I’ll make melodies on my guitar or record vocal harmonies in GarageBand that reflect my mood. I return to them later when the right lyrics find me. Sometimes the words come immediately, other times they don’t come at all, and that’s okay.
“I just allow myself to flow and let source move through me.”
Art & Motherhood
DH: As an artist and mother, how do you balance the music industry with your creative freedom and authenticity?
LS: I was an artist before I became a mother, and I’ll be an artist no matter how many little ones come into my life.
I generally have free time two weekends a month while my daughter is away with my coparent, and try to use my time practicing for or playing shows. Lately, I’ve been back in my creative flow and revisiting old ideas/meshing them with new things to see what I come up with.
“What Do We Do?”
NEW MUSIC
DH: Your newest release feels like a call for resolution. What do you hope listeners awaken to when they hear it?
LS: Honestly, I don’t have all the answers, which is why the chorus asks, “What do we do?” I just hope that the song sparks people to pause and reflect on the state of humanity and the societal norms we’ve come to accept without question.
